From May 8, 2026 to the present, an expedition team consisting of expedition leader S. Karlybayuly, researcher D.S. Bekturov, acting researcher R. Igilik, junior researcher S.A. Utegen and laboratory assistant N.B. Abishev has been conducting research in the Alakol Lake system under the budget program 021 (program item 100) and budget program 267 (program item 101).
The purpose of the research is to assess the current state of populations of the main commercial fish species in order to determine the permissible volumes of capture (catch) of fish resources and other aquatic animals in the Alakol lake system, develop recommendations for the rational management of fishing, as well as analyze the dynamics of biological diversity and develop measures for its conservation.
Currently, the expeditionary unit is carrying out a complex of scientific research works, including hydrochemical, hydrobiological and ichthyological studies.:
– sampling of hydrobiological, hydrochemical and ichthyological samples at monitoring stations;
– analysis of biological parameters of fish populations, including size and weight characteristics, as well as sex determination and stages of puberty;
– sampling to determine the fertility of the main commercial fish species of the Alakol lake system;
– conducting echo-sounder surveys at pre-determined points and analyzing the state of fishing in the research area.
During the period of scientific research in the Alakol lake system, the chief specialist of the Alakol department of the Balkhash-Alakol inter-regional basin Fisheries Inspection, Sh.B. Kulenova, participates.
Comprehensive research work will last until June 16, 2026.
