Conducting comprehensive monitoring on the Kigash River

From May 19 to May 31, 2026, employees of the Scientific and Production Center of Fisheries LLP, within the framework of an agreement with the Main Vodovod LLP, began performing comprehensive research work on the transboundary Kigash River on the topic: “Conducting a study to assess (calculate) the amount of compensatory damage caused to fish resources and other aquatic animals of the Kigash River as a result of the economic activities of the GVNS Kigash intake facility of the Astrakhan–Mangyshlak main water pipeline, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of fish protection facilities.”

As part of the seasonal monitoring, scientists from the head office of NPTS RH LLP, Asylbekova S.Zh., as well as specialists from the Atyrau branch, Kadimov B.L., Suleimenov S.B. and Abdoshova M.M., take hydrobiological samples aimed at assessing the state of fish resources and their food supply, including zooplankton and phytoplankton. During the work, the effectiveness of fish protection devices installed at water intake facilities is being studied in order to prevent the death of juvenile fish.

The Kigash River is a cross-border facility. A systematic scientific assessment will make it possible to develop effective measures to preserve biodiversity, protect migration routes and natural reproduction conditions for fish in this strategically important region.
