Objective: To conduct scientific research to determine the fish productivity of fisheries reservoirs and/ or their sites, to develop biological justifications for fishing limits for fish and other aquatic animals and to make recommendations on the regime and regulation of fishing in fisheries reservoirs of international, national and local significance of the Yertis basin. Assessment of the current state of stocks of the main commercial fish species, calculation of the maximum allowable volumes of seizure of fish resources and other aquatic animals, and development of recommendations for the rational management of fishing in the reservoirs of the Yertis basin.

Research objects: the main fishing reservoirs of the Yertis basin (Lake Zhaysan, Buktyrma reservoir, Ust-Kamenogorsk reservoir), Shulbinsk reservoir, Yertis River, K. Satpayev Canal), protected area reservoirs (Katon-Karagai GNPP – Lake. Yazevoye, Chernovoe Lake, Maralye Lake; Bayanauli GNPP – Lake Sabyndykol, Lake Zhasybai, Lake Toraigyr; Markakol GPP – lake. Markakol), local reservoirs of East Kazakhstan (Kurchum district – Lake Zhylytau, Lake Belkol, Lake Koskol 1, Lake Koskol 2, Lake Bezimyannoe 1, Lake Bezimyannoe 2) and local reservoirs of the Abai region (reservoirs Shar, reservoirs Alaigyr, pond (in the north-south direction of Nikolaevka village) Zharminsky district), reservoirs of local importance of Pavlodar region (Lake Burkitsor, Bayanaul district, Lake Bulambai, Bayanaul district, Lake Krivoe, Aktogay district, Cheldouk lake, Zhelezinka district, lake Ploskoe, Akkula district).

Fields of application: Reservoirs of international, national significance and reservoirs of protected areas of the Nur-Sarys basin.

Results obtained: Monitoring of key environmental factors and biological parameters of aquatic organisms continued in the 2025 research. The growth rate and other biological indicators of fish populations are analyzed. The assessment of the maximum allowable fish catch was carried out in accordance with the approved order of the Minister of Environment and Water Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 04.04.2014.  No. 104-O “On approval of the Rules for the preparation of a biological justification for the use of wildlife” (with amendments and additions to the wording of the Order of the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 18.10.2022, No. 662) [1]. The fishing situation in the reservoirs is analyzed, and materials on catches for fishing effort are given. Recommendations on optimizing the use of fish resources are given.

Fields of application: the Small Aral Sea, the Syrdarya River within the Kyzylorda region, the Tushchybas and Chernyshev bays of the Greater Aral Sea, the Shardara reservoir, the Syrdarya River within the Turkestan region, the reservoir of the Sairam-Ugam GNPP (Ugam, Mashat, Daubaba, Kokbulak rivers and Lake Balykty), as well as reservoirs of local importance of the reserve fund of the Kyzylorda and Turkestan regions.

Results obtained: As a result of the research, biologically based standards (volumes) of fish production and recommendations for optimizing the fishing regime in the Small Aral Sea, the bays of the Great Aral Sea and the Syrdarya River within the Kyzylorda region for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2026 were developed.

Research objects: The object of the study is commercial fish populations and hydrobiocenoses of lakes Sasykkol, Koshkarkol and Alakol.

Fields of application: Alakol lake system.

Results obtained: When studying the current state of populations of the main commercial fish species, an analysis of the long-term dynamics of their biological indicators over a period equal to the average life expectancy of a generation was carried out. Recommendations are given on carrying out land reclamation works in order to preserve and sustainably use biological resources of reservoirs, and a forecast of the maximum allowable volume of seizures for 2026 is calculated.

Research objects: The object of research is the Nuri River with floodplain reservoirs and reservoirs of protected areas – the Buiratau and Karkaralinsky National Park.

Fields of application: The Nuri River with floodplain reservoirs and reservoirs of protected areas – the Buiratau National Park and the Karkaralinsky National Park.

Results obtained: The results of the cadastral survey of Lake Azhbai, located on the territory of the National Research and Production Enterprise “Buiratau” and three reservoirs on the territory of the National Research and Production Enterprise are presented. An assessment is given of the main parameters of the aquatic environment, the state of the food supply, and the biological characteristics of the living fish: size, weight composition, linear and weight growth rate. Stocks of the main commercial fish have been determined. Recommendations on the use of reservoirs are given.

Yesil and Sileta. Assessment of the current state of stocks of the main commercial fish species, calculation of the maximum allowable volumes of seizure of fish resources and other aquatic animals, and development of recommendations for the rational management of fishing in the reservoirs of the Republic of Tatarstan. To conduct scientific research to assess the state of commercial stocks and the distribution of fish and other aquatic biological resources in the water area of reservoirs of local importance. Research objects:  The object of research is the Yesil and Silety rivers, the local reservoirs of the Yesil basin, as well as the reservoirs of the State Scientific and Production Enterprise “Burabai”, the State Scientific and Production Enterprise “Kokshetau” and the GPP “Korgalzhyn”.

Fields of application: The Yesil and Silety rivers, local reservoirs of the Yesil basin, as well as reservoirs of the National Research and Production Enterprise “Burabai”, the State Scientific and Production Enterprise “Kokshetau” and the State Processing Plant “Korgalzhyn”.

Results obtained: In the research of pp. Monitoring of key environmental factors and biological indicators of aquatic organisms continued in Esil and Sileta in 2025. The growth rate and other biological indicators of fish populations are analyzed. An assessment of the maximum allowable volume of fish seizures has been carried out, the fishing situation in reservoirs has been analyzed, and materials on catches for fishing efforts have been provided. Recommendations on optimizing the use of fish resources of the Russian Federation are given. Yesil and Sileta. The report presents the results of a cadastral survey of 19 reservoirs of local importance in the Esil basin. An assessment is given of the main parameters of the aquatic environment, the state of the food supply, the state of artemia populations, and the biological characteristics of the living fish: size, weight composition, linear and weight growth rate. Stocks of artemia cysts and major commercial fish have been determined. Recommendations on the fisheries management of reservoirs of local importance are given. The results of the cadastral survey of 6 reservoirs of the State Enterprise “Kokshetau”, 7 reservoirs of the State Enterprise “Burabai” and 3 reservoirs of the State Enterprise “Korgalzhyn” are also presented. An assessment is given of the main parameters of the aquatic environment, the state of the food supply, and the biological characteristics of the living fish: size, weight composition, linear and weight growth rate. Recommendations on the use of reservoirs are given. The maximum allowable catches have been determined for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2026.

Research objects: The Zhaiyk River with a pre-estuary area, including the Zhaiyk River, the eastern part of the Volga River delta (Kigash River) with pre-estuary areas.

Fields of application: Reservoirs of protected areas of the Zhaiyk-Caspian basin (the Zhaiyk River with a pre-estuary area, including the Zhaiyk River, the eastern part of the Volga River delta (Kigash River) with pre-estuary areas).

Results obtained: Based on the data presented in this biological substantiation, recommendations on restrictions and prohibitions, recommendations on the volume, species and age composition of stocks, and recommendations on fisheries reclamation were developed.

Balkash, the Ile River and in the reservoirs of the Ile River delta, at the Kapshagai reservoir and the Ile River, on the lakes Sredny Kolsai and Nizhny Kolsai and reserve reservoirs of local importance in the Zhambyl region.

Research objects: commercial fish populations and hydrobiocenoses of the lake. Balkash, the riverbed of the Ile River below the Kapshagai hydroelectric power station and the reservoirs of the Ile River delta, the Kapshagai reservoir, the retaining zone, the Ile River in its upper reaches, lakes Sredny Kolsai and Nizhny Kolsai located in protected areas of the Almaty region and reserve reservoirs of local importance of the Zhambyl region.

Fields of application: Lake Balkash, the Ile River and in the reservoirs of the Ile River delta, at the Kapshagai reservoir and the Ile River, on the Middle Kolsai and Lower Kolsai lakes and reserve reservoirs of local importance in the Zhambyl region.

Results obtained: The conducted studies allow us to identify trends in the development of ichthyofauna, assess fish stocks and recommend optimal fishing rates. The biological justification provides the results of comprehensive studies of the aquatic environment and biological resources of the lake. Balkash, the Ile River and in the reservoirs of the Ile River delta, at the Kapshagai reservoir and the For example, on the lakes Sredny Kolsai and Nizhny Kolsai and reserve reservoirs of local importance of the Zhambyl region for the spring–summer and autumn periods of 2025, an analysis of the long-term dynamics of biological indicators of the main commercial fish species for a period equal to the average age of onset of puberty is given. The size-weight, age, and sex structures of commercial fish populations are analyzed. Recommendations are given on optimizing the fishing regime (fishing measure, mesh size (pitch) in fishing gear, including recommendations on restrictions and prohibitions, fisheries reclamation and stocking of reservoirs for the conservation and sustainable use of fish stocks. Based on the analysis of the current state of populations of the main commercial fish species, their maximum allowable catch (MPF) for 2026 has been calculated.

Tobol, scientific studies have been conducted to assess the state of commercial stocks and the distribution of fish and other aquatic biological resources in the water area of local reservoirs, biological justifications for the use of fish resources in reserve reservoirs of local importance have been prepared, measures have been taken for fisheries reclamation, optimization of the regime and regulation of fishing.

019 Program “Implementation of Innovative Technologies for Preparing Broodstock for Obtaining Edible Caviar Using the Live Method to Increase the Range and Quantity of Legal Sturgeon Products and Enhance Their Export and Domestic Potential in the Mangystau Region”

Project Goal: Implementation of effective methods for preparing caviar broodstock to increase productivity and ensure consistent production of high-quality edible caviar at a fish hatchery in the Mangystau Region.

Project Objectives (3 activities over 20 months):

– Implementation of technological methods for grading sturgeon caviar replacement stock;

– Implementation of feeding rations for replacement broodstock to increase the efficiency of edible caviar production;

– Implementation of technological methods for the annual production of edible sturgeon caviar with the ability to preserve and restore spent females for repeated use.

Project Location: Kazakh Osseter Research and Production Enterprise (Kazakh Osseter)

Project Duration: 2025-2027

Expected Results:

– Technological assessment methods for the targeted formation of sturgeon egg replacement stock will be developed and implemented;

– Recommendations for optimizing the maintenance conditions of established sturgeon egg replacement broodstock maintained at Kazakh Osseter Research and Production Enterprise (Kazakh Osseter) will be developed and implemented to produce high-quality food-grade caviar.

– Innovative practices for maintaining egg broodstock in RAS will be developed and implemented at Kazakh Osseter Research and Production Enterprise (Kazakh Osseter) in the Mangystau Region.

– Assistance will be provided to agribusiness entities in the Mangystau Region in marketing fish products produced at fish farms in the region.

– The key personnel of Kazakh Osseter Scientific and Production Enterprise LLP will be trained in the above-mentioned innovative method and will have the competence to further ensure sustainable production.

Results achieved in 2025-2026:

Sturgeon grading (assessment of the productive qualities of sturgeon for their subsequent use) and inventory were conducted;

Promising females were selected for the production of live edible caviar.

The female caviar was overwintered for oocyte maturation.

20 kg of edible caviar was produced using the live method.

On May 12, 2026, the Faculty of Forestry and Land Resources at the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University hosted its traditional Job Fair for graduates.

The main objective of the event was to strengthen the interaction between students and employers, adapt young specialists to the requirements of the labor market, and expand their professional opportunities.

Leading companies and organizations from various sectors across the country participated in the fair, providing students with detailed information about job vacancies, industrial placements, internships, and career growth prospects.

Representing the Research and Production Center for Fisheries LLP, Dr. Tynysbek Temirkhanovich Barakbayev, Deputy General Director for Innovation and Production Activities, delivered a presentation.

During the event, students had the opportunity to communicate directly with employers, get answers to their questions, and familiarize themselves with company requirements. In turn, representatives of the organizations noted the high level of preparation of the future specialists and welcomed the chance to scout potential employees.

The fair proved to be an effective platform for open dialogue and new opportunities, with a number of students receiving preliminary offers for internships and future employment.

A field meeting titled “Powerful Regional Science – Powerful Region” was held in the Kyzylorda region.

On May 5–6, 2026, a field meeting of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held in the Kyzylorda region under the theme: “Powerful Regional Science – Powerful Region.”

During the session, chaired by D.E. Zhanalinov, Deputy Akim of the Kyzylorda region, reports covering various regional sectors were presented. At the event, Tynysbek Temirkhanuly Barakbayev, PhD, Deputy General Director for Innovation and Production Activities at  LLP “Fisheries Research and Production Center”, delivered a report titled: “Formation of Scientific and Technological Foundations for Improving Commercial Fish Farming Technologies in the Kyzylorda Region Based on the Aral-Syr Darya Basin.”

In his speech, he presented the results of the center’s ongoing research on regional aquaculture development, outlined the current challenges facing the industry, and proposed strategic solutions.

     

First Success of “Kazakh Osseter”: First Black Caviar Obtained via Non-Lethal Method in Mangystau

As part of budget program 019 for the introduction of innovative technologies in forming sturgeon broodstock to obtain food caviar using the non-lethal (live-stripping) method—implemented jointly with the LLP “Fisheries Research and Production Center”  and the Akimat of Mangystau Region—the first stage of work was successfully completed at the facilities of the “Kazakh Osseter” Research and Production Enterprise LLP.

The project aims to expand the range of legal sturgeon products, as well as to enhance its export and domestic potential in the region.

During the first stage, with the active participation of Guldana Maratova (Researcher at the Aquaculture Laboratory) and Zhasulan Urynbaev (Invited Fish-Breeding Technologist), a comprehensive set of key activities was carried out:

  • Tagging of caviar-bearing females using PIT tags;

  • Grading (bonitation) and selection of a promising broodstock;

  • Installation works and comprehensive preparation of the wintering complex;

  • Adaptation of fish followed by stocking for the wintering period;

  • Successful harvesting of food caviar via the non-lethal method.

This stage marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable and modern aquaculture in the Mangystau Region, focusing on environmental friendliness, premium quality, and high value-added products.

Issues of Developing International Cooperation in the Fisheries Sector Discussed

On November 10, 2025, a working meeting was held at the LLP “Fisheries Research and Production Center” with representatives of the international companies Aller Aqua Group (Denmark) and Aller Aqua Polska (Poland) regarding the construction of the “Aller Aqua” feed production plant in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The delegation included:

  • Jacek Juchniewicz, CEO of Aller Aqua Polska (Poland);

Deputy General Director of LLP “Fisheries Research and Production Center”, D.S. Akhmetzhanov, delivered a welcoming speech emphasizing the importance of cooperation in the development of the fisheries sector.

S.Zh. Assylbekova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, and Deputy Head of the Science Department, presented the activities of the Center and it’s current projects.

During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture development, implementation of advanced technologies, and experience exchange. After the presentations, they discussed current issues and prospects for future collaboration.

IV Kazakhstan – Jordan Business Council

On August 19, 2025, a meeting of the IV Business Council between Kazakhstan and Jordan was held in an online format. During the meeting, the prospects for bilateral cooperation in key areas were discussed: pharmaceuticals, trade and logistics, agriculture and tourism.

A report on the topic “Overview of fisheries and aquaculture in Kazakhstan: current status and future” was made by R.T. Barakov, Senior Researcher at the Aquaculture Laboratory. In his speech, he noted the role of research as a strategic driver for the development of the industry, emphasizing the importance of applied research and projects implemented jointly with business representatives.

Particular attention was paid to the integration of science and business in Kazakhstan and Jordan in solving global challenges – food security, water scarcity and the effects of climate change.

The Council became a platform for strengthening partnerships and developing joint solutions aimed at sustainable development.
